The table below shows the rise/set and twilight information:

Dawn Time Dawn Azimuth Dusk Time Dusk Azimuth

Moon --- --- --- ---
Astronomical --- --- --- ---
Nautical --- --- --- ---
Civil --- --- --- ---

The 3 types of twilight occur when the sun is at different points below the horizon:

  • Civil dawn is defined as the point where the geometric centre of the sun is 6 degrees below the horizon.  Civil twilight is the time between civil dawn and sunrise (dawn).
  • Nautical dawn is similar to civil dawn, but the sun is at 12 degrees below the horizon.  Again, nautical twilight is the period of time between nautical dawn and civil dawn.
  • Finally, astronomical dawn is when the sun is at 18 degrees below the horizon, and astronomical twilight is the time between astronomical dawn and nautical dawn.

Dusk is the reverse of these (i.e. civil dusk is when the sun is as 6 degrees below the horizon, and the evening twilight occurs from when the sun sets and when civil dusk is reached).
