Hi Roy. Glad it helped – it’s a bit scary when it happens and if you send the camera back to Canon it’s likely to be a $600 repair!

Unfortunately, it sounds like the Willing Webcam makes the same mistake I made early on when doing Canon development (Canon’s documentation is awful!), which means it has the potential to cause Error 70 again.

H,i My 7D suddenly yesterday developed this Err 70 syndrome, possibly because I was trying to set it up for Video chat using the camera instead for the Web Cam(couldnt be a bigger moron) any ways I did everething which is there on the net like..removing battery, removing lense, CF Card etc, seemingly frustrated just by chance stumble upon this site and followed the procedure mentioned for a possible solution of Error 70, and to my relief now the camera is working fine now.

All cameras so far only allow a single MA point for a lens and don’t take focal length into account. Canon have recognised that you need more than 1 MA point for zoom lenses, but only in the new 1D-X which allows MA setting at both ends of the zoom. So yes, in reality MA is a compromise for zooms. But it can be useful – suppose at the wide end you need +10 and the tele end you need +15, you choosing any value between about +8 and +17 would give you better images than leaving it at 0. In the example case, I would bias it a little towards the telephoto end as the DoF is shallower making MA more important, and choose a final value of +13.

Rich, that’s great news. I do have a question. I understand MA prime lenses. But I have several zoom lenses (17-85, 24-0105, 70-200). Can you really micro-ajust a zoom or is it really more of a compromise to use that technique (or your software)?

Hi Michel The software has moved on massively since the Beta release version 0.7.0/0.7.5, with improvements to the image analysis and results calculations. It has been tested with around 60 beta testers and shown to work very well for a wide variety of cameras and lenses. FoCal 1.0 is now available here if you are interested.

It works till 0.6.5 version
I don’t know if it is possible to test other AF points than center one.
You know it was an issue in some 1D and 1Ds Mark III: focus was correct in center point but may vary among the other ones.
I don’t know if each focus point is possible to asign or test in a separate/unique mode.

Thanks for your comments. Unfortunately, the new target in version 0.7.5 was not as successful as I’d hoped. Although it generally gave better results in very controlled testing, it is not reliable if not aligned perfectly. That’s the great thing about Beta software – it gives an opportunity to try new ideas, but this one didn’t work out so well!

The new version which will be released shortly have been through an extensive close beta test period and is working very well indeed. There are also extra tests and setup features which will help calibrate your lenses perfectly.

I’m sorry, but I’m not really familiar with Mac’s and parallels, although the package has installed for lots of people on Windows. I know someone tried an earlier version on some VM environment on a Mac but couldn’t get it to talk to the camera.

Just a question. I tried installing .75 on my Mac through parallels running windows 7 64 bit and it keeps giving me an error saying “This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package”. Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks.

It’s great you pushed this a bit further and found a solution to get out of the Err 70 !
Basically, it seems you made the same conclusions about the root cause of the bug as I did when this happened to my 7D, but mine was still in warranty and has been fixed by Canon repair center.

The results should be more consistent that that. There is an issue with the new target in version 0.7.5 where it is very sensitive to position and the results can be inaccurate if it is not in the correct location.

Further development has been done with a new target which has been designed to work with the image analysis calculations and the algorithm to give great performance.

Unfortunately, there is a bug in version 0.7.5 which affects some machines and give the Code 7 error. This will be fixed before the next release. It generally affects people with slower machines, so if you have another computer it might be worth trying on that.

no way of calibrating his Canon 50mm f1.4..!!!

Today I tried this version (0.7.5) with new target
70 – 12
135 -1 (but I saw in process -5)
200 -1 .

I don’t know why new version so unpredictable. (I saw -5, but finally program say – 1 is ok.

Canon 5D MArk II, distance 3,2 m in both cases.

I’m writting from Ibiza (balearic islands, Spain).
I’ve downloaded your software, and I’m pretty happy ..!!
I already had my lens(more or less) calibrated by “try & error” and they were almost perfect .. your software just put them one or two points up/down.
So, with my 5DmkII, …..
I’ve got my 85mm f1.8 at +11,
my 24-105mm f4 at +6
my 17-40mm f4 at +8
my 70-200mm f4 at +3

I’m happy with the results, and, yes, I will donate, because I think you did a great job.

Thanks, I appreciate your detailed response. May I suggest two enhancements:
1. Allow reviewing each test shot – both the camera settings used as well as the result. I love how the software shows the before and after. In my case I didn’t see significant improvements form the start (a situation I think most users would be in). So allowing to review the “decision process” of the software could instill a higher degree of confidence in the software.
2. Build in a logging facility that might allow us to send you log files with more detail about what actually was going on (instead of crude commentary about what the user thinks is going on).
I hope to find some time over the long weekend here in the US to check out the new version with both the 7D and the 5D.

Any software using the Canon SDK needs exclusive access as far as I can tell. I need to catch the situation where something else is using it and stop the crash – that’s just bad on my part!

On my machine, when I connect the camera to the computer with NO camera-related software running, it is detected and immediately locks the UI of the camera so every button press results in a BUSY. Only when something is running – e.g. AFMAC – will you be able to operate the camera. When the software closes down again, the camera reverts to the BUSY state. I believe this is normal behaviour – generally, the camera UI will be locked then connected to a computer to stop inadvertent changes being made. I had problems when I did this with the 7D, so I opted to leave the camera UI free while the software is running.

I haven’t really managed to get it to work with my 50 f/1.8. Although lenses which are soft-wide open shouldn’t cause problems, I’ll investigate whether there is any issue there. Obviously, closing down the aperture will increase the DoF and reduce the sensitivity of the test, but it might be better to do that with some user indication than to not be able to run the test at all! I have a suspicion that the problem might be related to the micro-motor in the lens – both the 50 f/1.8 and 50 f/1.4 are micromotor drive, whereas all other lenses I’ve tested with are USM.

Found your site yesterday through some posting in a DPR forum. FYI: today the tool even has its own thread: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1029&message=39910129

I like the general approach and that it verifies minimum light levels as well as target placement.

The software in its current version seems to demand exclusive access to the camera (e.g. not having the EOS Utility running at the same time) or it will crash. Also, it seems to be a good idea to shut down the program when changing lenses as I had crashes otherwise.

After running the program with the camera attached to the computer I find my camera needs a power cycle to be usable again – otherwise any button press on the camera will cause a “busy” on the top LCD. As documented the program fiddles with a small list of settings and you might need to adjust them back to your liking (e.g. I had the mirror lockup still set).

The program seems to improve results and gives reasonable new MFMA settings that were not too far off my manually determined ones – except for my 50mm f/1.4 prime where the program wanted to set MFMA to +20 from my current -2. The sceenshots of the target displayed did not show a visible improvement to my eye. I wonder if the program has trouble with a generally accepted soft lens at fully open aperture…

Unfortunately, the software does not support the 50D yet. Once I have good, reliable operation with the 5Dmk2 and 7D I will add support for other cameras – the 1Ds3 and 50D are next on the list.

I have tried 0.6.1 with 1Ds Mark III.
Firstly, it didn’t work, but I read every post in the web, and I decided to keep trying.
Program didn’t shot the camera in auto mode. I made a lot of tests, and finally I could do it manually, with a remote cable, avoiding shake.
In three lenses, values have been very near to my previous setting, and contrast now in better.
I have forgoten testing with extenders. I will do it tomorrow.

Bonjour,
Je viens de tester la version 7 du soft.
Le soft donne bien les bonne valeurs de correction c’est ok sur le 7D et windows 7 64 bits.
Par contre j’ai été obligé de rentrer les valeurs manuellement sur le 7D car par le biais du soft cela ne vas pas, les valeurs de correction son alléatoires.

Hi Rich, yes I confirm that I was running 0.7.0 with a 7D (I had previously uninstalled 0.6.2 release). I noticed also that initial parameters were not resetted after the end of the software (perhaps because of multiple failed before success?). For instance the mirror parameter was not resetted. I also got an Err... after the tests, but no number was associated with it. I only have to remove and replace the battery in order to get again the system ok. Cheers.

I would strongly suggest NOT using earlier versions of the software as the Error 70 bug can affect the camera even when you have removed the battery. I’m confused as to why the new version crashes – it seems to happen for around 2% of people. I’m looking into this at the moment.

One issue I’m currently investigating (which I put in the “known issues” section of the manual) is to do with the final value being close to the start value. I have some ideas about improvement in this area. I’m doing a lot of evaluation of various methods at the moment so there should be improvements in this area in the next release.

As for the -92… In previous versions of the software I deliberately took the AFMA value outside of the +20/-20 range for various reasons, but in this latest version I wanted to make sure it stayed within the “Canon defined” limits of -20 to +20, so there is no point in the software where it is deliberately set outside of this range. I am quite confused by you seeing -92! Just to confirm, you were running with a 7D, running version 0.7.0?

I have tested the old version (0.5.6) of this software on a 1Ds Mark III and it has worked with 24-105mm IS f:4.0 L.
In one of the test, I manually stopped it, and I get Error 70. Getting battery off the camera was the solution.
I have to test with other lenses.
New versions than this doesn’t work: program crashes.

Hi Rich,
congratulations for your AFMA software.
I have tested it (0.7.0 under win XP) with my 7D and my 70-200 f/4 L IS with and without the 1.4x Kenko; also with my 85mm f/1.8 USM.
When the program goes to the end, it is fine. But effectively when the estimated MA value is close to the native one (0 in my case), the proposed value at the end is not to change it although it seems it would be better with -1 or -2 for instance.
However the program very often does not go to the end. It fails for a reason that I ignore.
When I re-click on Start it begins again and sometimes success in ending, but most of the time it stops. I had to do a lot of tries in order to get success with it.
An other strange behaviour was a modification in the MA after the program has failed. The value was set to -92 ……
Thanks for your feedback if possible.

Thanks for the comment. I’m surprised this doesn’t work for 32-bit Win7 as I thought all the assemblies were build in 32 bit mode. I must admit to only having tested it on 64 bit machines, but I will create a 32-bit VM and install Win7 on that and do some testing.

first of all, my congrats with the new version to release.
seems the idea is great and will have a good future. just wondered if it is possible for you to do the build for Win7 32 bit? i believe there;s lots of win32 users and sharing this version, could provide much more feedbacks. frankly speaking i’m also of 32but win7 user, and would love to evaluate the SW with my 5dm2.

Unbelievable. It makes me so angry that they don’t investigate the problem and just replace the board. I understand why from their processes and cost point of view, but it’s unfair on the customers.

Sorry to hear you had to go through this. I’ve identified the problem (it’s to do with the way the Canon SDK is implemented), and have reworked the camera interface layer to ensure each camera is validated with all options that are available. This should stop the issue happening. I wish Canon had put some warnings in their documentation!!

Thank you for this software. IT is the best for zoom lenses.

I tested (5D MarkII) with 2500K light at home and all corrections were (-2-3 from my previous settings). I need additional test with 5000K and 6000K.

Couple words about target: I printed 2 (inkjet with best quality and Laser with normal quality) and I think the results was in LASER printed favour (all correction were more close for my previous reallife setting)

some times I was need to restart my computer (Win 7 64bit) because the program had some problems. After the failure the MFA was set +100.

what is the best versions of MFA for 5D markII?

Today I got my camera back from Canon. They had to change the system board to fix the error. Now everything is working just fine again

I guess there is just no way to reset the camera. Maybe Canon should include a little emergency reset switch inside the battery compartment to fix such problems.

I used the software with my 5d m2 , and it did a great job,I was having problem with my 70-200 f4 lens and the software calibrated it nicely. Luckly I haven’t noticed any issues so far but I’ll be looking forward to seeing the updated version . Thank you so much for all your efforts

I’ve managed to rescue my 7D which I got in this state last night. A guy on the Photography On The Net forum managed to get his working again, so I tried the operations and it worked for me.

Try this:
- Put the camera in C1/C2/C3 mode and power on. Go through the custom functions and restore the settings back to default. Restore as many other settings as possible to default (I’m not sure these last 2 steps are required but I’ll have more on it later)
- Power the camera off.
- Remove the lens
- Switch the camera to CA mode
- Power it back up again – with luck, you’ll see a more compact menu on the back (i.e. NOT error 70 in this situation)
- For me, I then just switched to Av and it all worked OK.

I’m actually working on trying to get my 7D to throw an Error 70 again so I can better understand both the problem and the fix.

Let me know how you get on with the steps above and if it fixes the camera. If it doesn’t try combinations of removing the battery/memory card/lens and powering up in various different modes. These steps have worked for at least 3 people so far.

the error you describe is same I have with my 7D. I can still use the camera in C1, C2 and C3 modes, but in all other modes it immediately reports ERR 70. I can also control the 7D with EOS Utilities or gphoto2/Linux in modes C1 to C3 but in no other modes. As you said unfortunately you cannot reset the camera in modes C1 to C3.

@Rich: How can I do an NV reset?

Hi Vlad. Thanks for getting in touch. I in this instance, the issue is with downloading from the camera, and I’ve had 2 reports of it happening with a 5Dmk2 as well. Somehow, an image gets “stuck” in the buffer and I guess it needs an NV reset.

I noticed that c1/c2 etc worked, so the camera itself is working, it’s just a software state-machine issue.

Hi,

I’m a registered developer with Canon Europa and tried the EOS SDK for a personal project. One day I also bricked my EOS 7d, it stopped working reporting this ERR 70 almost all the time ! I say almost because you may try to power it down and put it on C1 or C2 or C3 mode, then power it… it may work ! Tell me. Unfortunately in C1/C2/C3 the reset does not work… I send my EOS 7D back to Canon and they repaired it. I think they have a tool to reset the flash memory. The 7D must have a flash memory and some battery backup memory for settings because putting out the lithium battery for very long time only reset the later one but not all the settings.
I tried to investigate what could have happened and I think there is potential mismatches between old and new protocols in the SDK and the code samples ! I think that it’s possible that legacy commands are sent to the camera instead of the current version of the commands, I mean for example : EdsImageQualityForLegacy enum values instead of EdsImageQuality and it seems to lockup the 7D !
I have reproduced the bug with a 40D, but this camera only report the error but a power cycle restore it !
I hope this may help and I’m very interested about any information and solution about this problem !

have you tried, after the error with the 7D, to control the 7D via EOS-Utility?

On my system (Windows 7 – 7D) was one run possible with a wrong result (7D + Sigma 17-70/2.8-4.0). I found myself a result of +3 and now the program calculates -2. The resulting picture is unsharp. During a second try the program stops with an “internal error” and no further program-run works.
It has had no negativ effect for my 7D.

This version bricked my 7D !!! All I get is ERR 70. I can’t take any pictures

AFMAC still recognizes the camera but says “An error occured while trying to restore the camera settings. Please disconnect the camera, reconnect it and restart the software – it will attempt to restore the settings when it starts next”

After disconnecting the 7D, removing the battery and even the small 3V battery the 7D still gives me ERR 70. Then AFMAC asks me to restore settings but no hope: “The camera settings could not be restored.”

So I can’t use my 7D at all any more because right after switching it on “ERR 70″ occures.

@All the other users: Beware, please don’t use this software!

What should I do now ?

It did cross my mind and in fact I’ve just redone the GUI in the latest version to at least show a camera and lens, but they are fixed at the 5Dmk2 and 100L (just for “eye candy” more than anything else).

I may add an image for the correct lens, but it raises a few problems – where to source appropriately licensed images from? How to store them without unnecessarily bulking the software out and creating a bigger download? And also… what benefit does it really give the user?

I will definitely revisit the idea, but only once the software is stable and reliable.

Yep, there was a problem with that version when it was installed on the C drive as it would require administrator priviliges. However it's quite old - 0.6.2 and 0.6.5 have since been released - the latest version (0.6.5) is available here.

The non-focussing issue should be resolved now. I made the software too sensitive and it was flagging up no focus far too often!.

ISO is set to 100 to reduce noise, otherwise it can affect the results of the analysis to determine the best AFMA, therefore making it less reliable. Exposure compensation is raised as the QR code is, on average, more towards white than 50/50 black/white mix, so to get a proper exposure it should be raised. It just helps get more consistent results from the image analysis.

I completely agree with you about calibrating at a “typical” working focal length – I think this will give a better result generally. However, if you calibrate very close to MFD on several lenses, I found the results to be a bit off (they were mathematically correct for the position, but they didn’t translate to very good “real world” values).

I’ve just released a new version which might address some of your issues here.

Thanks very much for the feedback. The first problem - about the focus not being set - was to do with an overly sensitive heuristic method of trying to find out if the lens had focussed. I've since removed that code as it was causing too many problems. I've just released a new version which has a modified algorithm which *should* make it more consistent. It sounds like mirror lockup has been left activated – this is one setting that is adjusted when the test starts and should be restored, but if there is a problem with the PC software it cannot always restore.

You should go to the custom functions menu, Go to C.Fn 3 (Autofocus/Drive), and then scroll to number 6 (Mirror Lockup). Ensure the setting is disabled.

It depends. My 24-70L is not very sharp, so the best setting is actually still quite blurry. All the software does is try to find the best value - it obviously can't make the lens any sharper than it is physically capable of. Having said that, if the images are massively blurry and obviously out of focus, the software may not be operating correctly. You should ensure focus happens when you half press the shutter button, and that the lens is not in manual focus mode. Both of these are either detected or automatically adjusted where possible in the new version of the software, just released here.

Gave a few different results if run again and again though. Sometimes reported non focusing lens on 100mm 2.8 usm and 70-200mm 2.8

I take it this program sets the iso at 100?

Any reason it adjust the Exp comp by a stop?

I know Canon recommend setting the camera up at 50x FL but should we be calibrating at the distance from the subject we normally work at with the given lens? Anything to be gained by calibrating that way you think?

Just thought I’ve pass along my notes for version 0.6.2 on my canon 5dmkii. I’m running it on an EEEpc w/ windows XP (sorry it’s my only windows machine).

Struggled to get it to complete a test at first. Either it would fail because it claimed that the focus could not be set or it could not download an image. However, I got it to work by first running the EOS utility, snapping a few images via EOS utility (ensuring that it did indeed focus, and would download the images), then quitting out of the EOS utility and starting up AFMAC. AFMAC would then run the test without issue.

Results were a bit iffy with 35L. First two successful runs were 0, -1, but then it started going haywire and putting in massive adjustments on subsequent runs. Manual testing confirms 0 is a winner.

thanks for your hard work on this! will try again with cal target printed on a different printer on nicer paper and see how it goes.

This is not working for me! Now when I try to use my camera it is all messed up. I will have the shutter set to 200 and it just stays open for a while and then shuts. Plus there is no photo taken… Please help, I need my camera back to normal!

It keeps telling me I am on manual focus. I have 2 50mm 1.2 and is does the same for both lenses. I did get it to work on my 24mm 1.4. Any suggestions?

A few people have seen that error – it should say to restore the AFMA value back to the original setting, but for some reason it’s saying 111. I’ll make sure this is fixed in the next version of the code.

Hi Ben. Good point about the Code 7 – I’ll change the way it reports that now as it should save time (for users and for me!). The distance to target calculation is very approximate due to the way it’s calculated – it assumes the target is a known size and this will vary also, so I would say it’s typically accurate to within maybe 20cm. This is enough to detect massive out-of-position errors, but I wouldn’t worry about a shift in the decimal place. Also, I’ve changed how I think the test should be run and will be suggesting using the target at a “typical” usage distance. I’ll explain more in the instructions when I release the new version.

I’ve added a simulation mode in for my development so I can simulate lenses which are way out of of spec and which behave oddly. I’ll be using this to try and get the software to handle the edge cases better and stop suggesting +30 or -30 when something goes a bit awry.

I downloaded the 0.6.1 version a week or so ago and found that the software wouldn’t run with the Canon 7D connected to the laptop.Running the software before connecting the camera does the trick. Not sure if this has been fixed in the latest update or not. Excellent software mate.

The MFA dialog box comes up directly after the select camera dialog, and on my Win7 x/64 machine unless the select camera box is answered the MFA box beeps upon click-on.

Noticing the distance to target varies on each subsequent exposure, usually the same two measurements i.e. 2.6m, 2.7m, 2.6m, … Moving the tripod back .05m to cover the possible round up value was unsuccessful in changing that.

At 1024 x 1280 the after view is partially obscured by the right frame boundary, and no normal window alterations allow it to be fully seen.

Great software, however. The registration code error 7 would be better were it explained more in the error text. Invalid target had me using a laser measurement tool and live view to go through any change to the target mounting: is it perfectly plumb, is the camera focal plane perfectly parallel to the wall with the taget affixed, etc. Spent 45 minutes in precisely mounting an 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper before I realized I had typed a dash rather than an underscore in the reg code.

Again, great software. It allowed my images to be much sharper, and the Zone AF on my 7D seemed to more accurately focus on what I intended from the viewfinder post the MFA adjustment.

Went back and tried it again, but same results. Keeps thinking the lens is in manual focus mode. I also tried my 10-22. I gave same error, accept one time it ran the test complete, but came up with a -30 MA. Really want to make this work.

thanks for taking the time to develope this program, it looks really promising. I managed to check a Tamron 17-55 on a 7D at 55mm and the target on a wall 2.5m away and the program performed as advertised and told me that the lens was already at the optimum setting. Great!
Then tried a 100-400 at 100mm with the target 5.2m away. Started ok but after a couple of shots it says that it can’t focus the lens and maybe it’s set to manual. It is set to AF and IS off.

Tried it tonight with my lenses, and I had a hard time getting good results.
– I had a lot of “cannot restore camera settings” : I had to turn off the camera, quit the software, and try again lots of times.
– Many “the lens is not focussing” (yes with two “s”), where the lens would focus well just the picture before.
– I try it once, the software tells me it found a value of +6, I try it again without changing anything, and AFMAC tells we a value of -30 has been found… I wonder how accurate the results are…

Rich, I downloaded 0.6.2 for my 7D. Using XP Pro, 32 bit. Software worked perfect for my Sigma 50mm F/1.4. Ran three times, came up with +4, +5 and +5. I then ran my Canon 17-55 f/2.8 and it continually failed. Error was “lens not focusing, check to see if it is set on manual focus…you know the rest. It was not. Tried at 55mm and 35mm, to know effect. Ay ideas? Love the software, by the way.

Error and manual ‘back to111′

But I have problem for rest the lenses as an error message come up, and ask me ‘set this value manually back to111′.

You should check that you entered the registration code correctly (RTL_055P), as code 7 means the target is not valid.

Running Canon 7D here. Works fine. However, when I exit, my mirror lock up settings is left enabled when I start to take pictures. Can you reset the mirror lockup parameter when the program exits?

As I’m still pinning down the differences between cameras, I’ll stick with support only for the 5Dmk2 and 7D until I get access to other cameras. I’m hoping to have a chance to work with a 1Dsmk3 next week sometime which should allow me to add the necessary detection and choosing of functionality for this camera.

I have the same problem with version 0.6.2 Running EOS 1d Mark III and Windows Vista 32 Bit. When i tried running version 0.6.1 I was able to use the software but even with AF set to the shutter-button i had to manually press the shutter-button on the camera to caputure the images.

now it works fine with lenses till 100mm. I tested it with my 300mm lenes, but then I have to use a distance more then 4m … this is too much for my room.
I will try it with a smaller traget. I will put 4 in one A4, because I have the feeling, that the program did not find enough details.

An update. After changing the AF to shutter button, the focus seem to go through. However I still get the No target found error at the refining stage. I am not sure if it has got to do with the AF Microadjust is in disabled state in my Menu (I noticed that just now.. dumb me..) BTW, after the failure the MFA was set to -92 for the 200mm F2.8 lens. This also means that the restore may have some issues. I will await if you have another bug fix release. Thanks, Deepak

The AF adjustment is different when the lens of 1 m to 5 m or
100m to 5m to achieve sharp

example:
Object distance is 5 m

Lens at infinity: AF adjustment of -5
Lens is at 1m: AF adjustment of +3

thx to your advice to install on non-system-drive it works!

It may be interesting to hav the possibility to adjust the time between mirror-up and shot to avoid trilling of the tripod due to the mirror-movement.

For long zoom-lenses (e.g. 300mm)it is not practical to have a 50x 300mm = 15m distance. I think, a smaller print of the target could help here, to use shorter distances.

Unfortunately, the 600D and the 60D do not support AF Microadjust on the user interface of the camera. There is a possibility I might be able to make it work on those cameras but I don’t have access to one at the moment. When the software is robust and stable with all cameras that are known to support AF Microadjust, I will start to look at other cameras.

What happens it camera settings are completely in caos and the lens is bring to -30…When I restart the program i asks me to “restore ” my settings but nothing happen and the camera rests in caos.

I’ve done all my lenses no with this software. I have jet to test everything, but I think the results are great!

I have uses a windows 7 64bit laptop, Its crucial that the latest drivers are installed and that you are using the Center AF point. NOT the SPOT AF on the 7d. (and for me the AV mode works best)

I’ve calibrated my 7d with the following lenses:

24-105
70-200 II
50 MM 1.4
85 MM 1.8

I think I’m going to calibrate my 17-85 also.

Again thanks for this great piece of software can’t believe Canon does not deliver this with the camera…

I used to have a 40D but I can’t remember if it has microadjust… iirc it doesn’t. In which case it *may* work, but it’s unlikely on that model. Newer models (e.g. the 60D) may work as the code base of the camera firmware is likely to be very similar to a model which supports it (e.g. the 50D or 7D), so it may be that Canon have just not shown the microadjust settings on the user interface but it can still be controlled with this software. But that’s a guess… I haven’t tried it with a 40D or 60D yet.

Glad to hear it worked for you.

If you swap a lens, you will have to close the camera (go back to the camera selector dialog) and re-open it. The lens is only evaluated when the camera is opened.

The before and after images are 100% crops of the centre of the sensor – you can’t get any more detail than that! The software will notice tiny improvements that the eye may not, but in reality you will find that if you can’t tell the difference between the before and after images then either value will do (and they are probably consecutive AFMA values).

I’d never thought of manual focus lenses with focus confirmation. I was about to explain how you don’t need AF microadjust for manual focus, but obviously the focus confirmation uses the AF sensor so it may be subject to the same errors! I will have a think about this…

Windows tell me that the pgm is not running anymore and ask me to close it.

I just tried your software with my 7d. Very easy to use. I did notice that you have to completely shutdown the software between lenses. One thing that I did have trouble with was the before and after photos. Sometimes the adjustment was so small that it was difficult to compare the two images. It would be nice if you could zoom in some more or just have larger images to view.

I also wish there was a way to use it with manual focus lenses that tell the camera when it is in focus.

Overall this program was great. Tried it multiple times on each lens an came up with similar results each time.

I used it for 7D with 100-400 that gave predicted value as -30 (distance 8.2m for 400mm).
I then tried with 200mm f2.8 with same distance. It does preliminary checks and then says no target found.
I also noticed that there is no attempt to focus. Shouldn’t it be there. I deliberately defocussed and the focus ring never moved.
I am testing it on Windows XP home. Would that be an issue?

This will be the best piece of software once it’s functional.
I hope you will have solution for the issues above.

I like this programm very much!!

I’ve been testing it ith my 7d and my 70-200mm F2.8 II and my 24-105 F4.

I’ve manually adjusted the 24-105 before, because i did not get sharp enough results with it. My manual testing, with the spyderlenscal, resulted in a +7 adjustment. Your software is telling me a -1 adjustment is better. And it does look better on the “before-after” comparison.

But I’ve noticed that the camera need to be on AV for the software to work properly. If I put the camera on the P mode, the software uses F32 and 30sec exposure. And that gives a adjustment of +30.

I’m going to test with my 24-105, I was very happy with the results I got after my manual adjustment, but maybe its gotten even better now. I will let you know!

Thanks for a great program Rich! it worked absolutely wonderfully on my 7d last night with my 35L, Sigma 85, and 24-70L… Once I can get a bit more distance to the target, I plan to test my 70-200 II and 100L …. Once again, outstanding work! Thanks for all of your work on this.

I’ve just tried the your software with my 7D and a EFS 15-85 that i move to 50 mm and all goes fine.
I’m going to test other lenses and report to you.
